Revolutionize Walking and Balance Recovery with Locomotor Therapy
Welcome to our mission to transform rehabilitation through evidence-based locomotor therapy. We empower patients with neurological impairments and elderly individuals to regain mobility and independence using innovative tools like the SensibleSTEP gait robot and Bodyweight-Supported Treadmill Training System.
Led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Parit Wongphaet, our programs deliver proven results for stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), Parkinson’s, and community-dwelling elderly.

What is Locomotor Therapy?
Locomotor therapy out performs conventional training, helping patients achieve independent mobility and reducing fall risks.
Locomotor therapy restores walking and balance by applying proven neurophysiological knowledge of the motor control system, focusing on stimulation of the gait central pattern generator (CPG) and motor re-learning. In simpler terms, lay people may say locomotor therapy is practice walking by walking assisted a lot.
Examples include:
  • Treadmill training with body weight support
  • End-effector robotic gait training (e.g., SensibleSTEP)
  • Ground-based walking practice
By aligning with the body’s natural walking patterns and CPG stimulation, it outperforms conventional training, helping patients achieve independent mobility and reducing fall risks by over 90% in elderly populations. (Source: Wongphaet et al., 2016; Cochrane Reviews)

Large-Scale Meta-Analyses
  • Cochrane reviews demonstrate that electromechanical-assisted gait training (e.g., SensibleSTEP, BWSTT) significantly increases the likelihood of independent walking post-stroke compared to conventional therapy (Mehrholz et al., 2020).
  • For spinal cord injury (SCI), locomotor training improves walking ability more effectively than traditional methods (Mehrholz et al., 2012).
  • In Parkinson’s disease, treadmill training enhances gait speed and stride length, outperforming standard physiotherapy (Mehrholz et al., 2015).
Results from Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital
  • A retrospective study of 108 patients using SensibleSTEP showed significant Functional Ambulation Category (FAC) improvements (p<0.0001), with 30.6% of dependent patients achieving independent walking after 10 sessions. Subacute patients showed greater improvements than chronic (p=0.0094). (Source: Evaluation of SensibleSTEP, 2024)
  • No major complications; minor issues (e.g., dizziness) resolved quickly, confirming safety and efficacy. (Source: korat SensibleSTEP report draft, 2024)
Published Studies by Our Team
  • Wongphaet et al. (2016) showed BWSTT reduced fall rates by over 90% in community-dwelling elderly, improving balance and walking compared to conventional balance training. (Source: J Thai Rehabil Med, 2016)
  • Ngamwongsanguan (2024) found SensibleSTEP improved FAC, gait speed, and balance in elderly post-hip fracture patients after 8 sessions, with statistically significant results. (Source: ASEAN J Rehabil Med, 2024)
  • Wongphaet’s 2010 review highlighted locomotor therapy’s alignment with neurophysiology, showing superior outcomes for stroke and SCI rehabilitation. (Source: J Thai Rehabil Med, 2010)
